When you're deciding upon which movie to see, be it renting a movie and staying in your North Vancouver condo to watch it or venturing out of your home to see movie magic on the big screen, do you read reviews to help you decide or just come up with your own review? Everyone has his or her own way of choosing which movie to watch and we're just curious what your style is?
There are some movie critics/reviewers working today that command the utmost respect and whatever they say about a movies goes. A couple of names that come to mind are David Edelstein who writes film reviews for New York Magazine and of course, the world famous Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times. Listening to what they have to say about a movie, the way it was shot, how crisply written the dialogue was, or how great the acting was can really influence those reading their reviews to go see a particular film they had no interest in seeing.
Conversely, you can say the opposite of a movie they panned or that they didn't quite like. If either of those two film critics were to say something bad about a movie it will impact some readers who'll decide not to go see a movie that they had high expectations for because of a bad review. That's just how powerful a film review can be. So, again, that brings us back to our earlier question. Do you pay much weight to movie reviews when it comes to making a choice as to what film you should or should not see?
We ask that question again because it's an important one. Some people will deliberately ignore reviews of movies they want to see because they don't want to hear anything potentially bad about a movie they're excited to see. Having high hopes for a much-anticipated film only to hear it bomb in reviews brings a person down. Look at The Hangover II for example. After the surprise smash hit that was the original The Hangover movie fans of that particular film were quite excited when word came out there would be a sequel.
Then reviews started coming out as to how the sequel was just a re-hash of the original, only in a different location, and that made fans looking forward to more Zack Galifianakis hijinks waver as to whether or not they should pay their hard earned money to watch something that might possibly not be that good. That just goes to show you how much sway a film review, message board comments or website film ratings such as Metacritic or Rotten Tomatoes can have when it comes to the movie industry.
Some film companies will deliberately not screen movies in advance to critics because they know it will be panned and want to avoid bad publicity. However, sometimes, bad reviews won't matter depending on how rabid the fan base of a particular movie or film franchise is. All the bad reviews of Twilight didn't stop fans who needed their vampire fix to flock to the theater to see it. So, sometimes reviews matter and sometimes they don't; the only review that counts though is your own!
